This summer I spent some beautiful days in Spain.
There is something about the feeling of sand between my toes…
Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said in a press release:
“We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres host the Oscars. As a longtime friend, we had always hoped to find a project for us to do together and nothing could be more exciting than teaming up to do the Oscars. There are few stars today who have Ellen’s gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity. She is beloved everywhere and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theatre, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are.”
Now, thirty years later, my sister in law wanted it out of her house, and I was ever so happy to reclaim my first DIY project.
For some time now, I’ve been thinking of trying spray painting and thought this was a perfect opportunity. After washing the old dresser, I used some sheets of strong paper coated with a layer of sand for smoothing. I got a slightly polish surface.
Then I graduated to the real task, and it was so fun. So rapid and the result were great.
I actually didn’t want to stop, so I painted the chair as well.
I really satisfied with the result.
Since I’d painted the shell as well, I put it up, and I love my redecorated room. 🙂
Sometimes I find myself with a great idea, and the time to be creative, just to meet my piece of art not exactly to my liking. Sound’s odd? Or familiar?
I thought the idea was brilliant. However, I didn’t quite like my painting. I had it on my wall for a couple of weeks, but I didn’t feel the resonance I need to get from my art. So I took it down, and forgot about it.
I’ve always thought it was the background colour I couldn’t stand, it was pink, all right, but not the shopping pastel pink I was going for at the start of the work. But I realized that I need the screaming pink background for my never – again- usable credit cards. By adding a dark blue sparkling paint on the silver letters, the statement popped out of my painting, and made my day.
The final result is now on my wall, speaking to everybody that enters the room.
The reason I started working on this painting again, was also inspired of this cute little sign, which I know have placed under my painting.
Together, they speak my truth…
There should be one more sentence on the sign though;
There is nothing that can get me in a greater summer mood than great nail art. Today I found some old photos of my nails, done by professionals… The first photo shows my nails done in Benidorm, Spain. It was years ago, but wow, I still think they were great!
Today I met a woman with great nail art, and I just stopped her and complimented her. (I thought on my random act of kindness project, as well…) They were done as watermelons, and I’ve never seen this in real life. They were great.
She was a tourist, from New York, and she just e-mailed me a promised picture of her nails in a strawberry style she had done earlier this summer. They were also great! Thanks Olivia, for letting me sharing 🙂
I couldn’t write this post on nail art for the summer without some serious work on my own nails, so this is what I’ve done this afternoon…
Thanks for the inspiration, Olivia, and all others who like to keep the summer on the tip of your fingers.
I’m sitting here, with a big lump in my throat, and I’m afraid to burst into tears any minute. And that’s okay, I could cry, but when I think about why I’m upset now, I get angry as well. Why is it okay for some people to say anything they want, just to be funny. I really got hurt tonight, it was probably insignificant for everybody else, but to me, it was devastating. Who hurt me; a man I hardly know…, He is the brother of a friend of mine, so I meet him occasionally at family dinners at my friend’s house. Tonight I was really his target, he needed to make fun of someone, and he chose me… He knew something about my situation, and he asked me about it, and I answered truthfully. Then he made fun of me in front of the whole family. Oh, I should probably pity him; he must be so insecure to use my situation, but right now, I’m hurt. It’s also painful that nobody intervened. Why didn’t my friend say something to her brother?
I know, I’m being emotional and I should probably just move on, and tell myself that he is a jerk, and I shouldn’t bother thinking about this anymore… But it’s easier said than done. I know, I need to get over this and myself, and just laugh it away. And that’s why I try to write myself out of my painful feelings… When I’ve finished this blog post, I’m probably feeling better about this, right?
I found this statement; I wish I believed this strongly.
A writer was sued for $60 million dollars after writing a book about a convicted Orange County serial killer. Although the inmate is on death row, he claimed that he was innocent in all 16 murders, so the characterization of him as a serial killer was false, misleading and “defamed his good name”. In addition, he claimed those falsehoods would cause him to be “shunned by society and unable to find decent employment” once he returned to private life. The case was thrown out in a record 46 seconds, but only after $30,000 in legal fees were incurred by the writer’s publisher.
A woman in Israel is suing a TV station and its weatherman for $1,000 after he predicted a sunny day and it rained. The woman claims the forecast caused her to leave home lightly dressed. As a result, she caught the flu, missed 4 days of work, spent $38 on medication and suffered stress.
(maybe something to think about after the summer season we’ve had… )
Susanna Barrett, mother of 5 year old Isabella, was terribly offended that several media websites dared to claim that her daughter was acting like a hooker, so she sued for 30 million in damages. The lawsuit goes on to allege that because of the media’s coverage of Isabella’s Libation lambada, the 5-year-old is now “perceived sexually, erotically and pornographically,” and that the media articles “have placed Isabella in serious physical danger, attracting the attention of others who would seek to sexualize a child.” These are serious accusations, which I don’t mean to laugh of and I agree that these media outlets have potentially opened up a child to be viewed as a “sexual icon,” but what about Susanna herself? What part did she play in this? By virtue of allowing her daughter to appear on Toddlers & Tiaras — a show that features little girls dressed up as Pretty Woman and Dolly Parton, complete with fake tans, fake hair, fake nails, and even fake teeth — hasn’t Isabella’s mother already done that on her own?
A college student in Idaho decided to “moon” someone from his 4th story dorm room window. He lost his balance, fell out of his window, and injured himself in the fall. Now the student expects the University to take the fall — he is suing them for “not warning him of the dangers of living on the 4th floor”.
A woman went into a Northridge discount department store to buy a blender. She decided to take the bottom box from a stack of four blenders from an upper shelf used to store extra stock. When she pulled out the bottom box, the rest of the boxes fell. She sued the store for not warning customers from taking stock from the upper shelf and for stacking the boxes so high. She claimed to sustain carpal tunnel syndrome and neck, shoulder and back pain.
A minister and his wife sued a guide-dog school for $160,000 after a blind man learning to use a seeing-eye dog stepped on the woman’s toe. She sought $80,000 for medical bills, pain & suffering, humiliation and disability. Her husband sought the same amount for loss of his wife’s care, comfort and consortium.
And finally something to think about these days in London; Organizers of an Olympics event were ordered to pay damages to a man who missed the event due to heavy traffic. In Japan, a court has ordered the organizers of the Nagano Winter Olympics to pay damages for mental anguish to a spectator who missed an event because of heavy traffic…
I must admit it I’m one of those that actually thought that we would have a nice summer this year… And yes, we have had some nice days in between, but no consistency! So instead of sitting in the garden or at the beach, enjoying the sun I’ve found myself doing a lot of other activities:
Since my garden furniture has not been used this summer, I’ve had the pleasure of cleaning it several times this season. And since the rain has been pouring down several times during a week, the fact is that a simple task of cutting the grass has become a science, when to cut, how to cut wet grass, and so on. I have failed to complete the task though, even me, the routine person, has failed. You see, I usually poor myself a glass of wine after cutting the grass, in normal summer seasons. Since the weather has postponed my duties of cutting grass, I’ve gone directly to the glass of wine…
It’s a well-known fact, that when summer is bad, the shopping malls get higher income. Several families tend to spend the majority of their vacation in the activity of shopping, instead of enjoying a nice day at the beach, the park, the cabin… When the sun disappears, the hidden credit cards get maxed out. Since I’ve enjoyed a long vacation this year, my credit card maxed out weeks ago. Well, I stick to my shopping routine with the girlfriends, even though I don’t do any shopping anymore… You see, we always go to a bar to end the shopping spread. So I’ve just started to go directly to the bar… Nothing’s like a Cosmopolitan with the girlfriends after some summer shopping.
3 GET VISITORS
Well, this is not exactly a sunless summer activity; I always get visitors during the summer holiday. The x-tra activity by having visitors that you can’t accompany to the beach, to the park, to the cabin, because of the bad weather, tend to imply a lot of visits to amusement parks, were we all can enjoy a rainy day which imply that most of the fun stuff to do is closed due to security reasons. We usually end up in a tent and hope to find some ice-cream for the kids, and adult beverages, at least for me. Yesterday I was singing my way home…
4 GETTING UPDATED ON THE WORLD OF TELEVISION
Well, I stole this one from my friend Nina, who said that she’d never seen so many programs on television… For me, that’s not the case, since all the rain plays into action with my parabola antenna and causes a black screen at my house. But I agree with Nina, who said that she and her husband had gotten into the habit of drinking some wine, while they followed the series… I’ve been excluded of following the series, but the wine part is done!
5 REDECORATING THE HOUSE
I know many of you have been active in redecorating rooms this summer. This is an activity that I often think of as a winter activity, or autumn,, I mean, redecorating the living room before Christmas, so that the colours just coordinate with your favourite ornaments, with some early Christmas music in the background, zipping to a deep red wine… It’s a winter activity! Decorating in the summer season should be limited to the outdoors areas, and topped with some chilled champagne in a nice sunny garden… Well, as mentioned under Gardening, there have not been many occasions of using the garden this season. The champagne and dark red wine have not been excluded, though.
